A Whole New World

Hah, easy loot, I wondered in amusement when I emptied one more safe. Nobility tends to get careless when the summer comes. So many open windows that it's like a test for my discipline. And that really isn't one of my strengths.

I slid from the saferoom to the open moonlit corridor where I listened to the sleeping nobility. Nothing deviant from the normal. I moved to the open window as quietly as I could and hopped onto the open windowsill. I'd be long gone before anyone woke up. I would love to see their faces when they wake up.
I'm not your ordinary thief. Or technically I am. I do steal stuff but I only steal from the rich and only to fill up my stomach. I'm not Robin Hood: I don't steal to give money to the poor, that's not how I work. I don't have plans to be the ruler of thieves like most of the common underground scum. Is it so wrong to take from someone who has too much? Not in my opinion. There are two classes in the town: The nobility which I harass every time I have a chance and the poor, working class. The nobility oppresses the poor and death by starvation was a daily business.
I jumped from rooftop to another and slowed my pace to a slow jog. It was a silent night. No guardpatrols, no wandering drunks and especially not those sneaky saveurs. Saveurs were the assassins of the city. They were quick, deadly and like that wasn't enough, they usually had a special trick or two up their sleeves. Sneaky little buggers. I had been lucky enough to have encountered only one those things and it nearly killed me that time. I was able to distract it with pure dumb luck and tunnels that sprawled under the city like a huge maze. I wasn't sure if my luck would carry me through another clash with one of the creatures.
I halted to a stop at the edge of a rooftop near my hideout. It was a warm night and pleasant breeze crossed my face. I survived another night. But how many would there be before someone caught me? How long would my luck last? I'd been on the streets for 4 years now. I was 17 and all alone. I hadn't had anyone to trust to since my brother was taken away from me exactly 4 years ago. Saveurs had taken him from the streets and dragged him to the prisons of the palace. I haven't heard anything from him after the incident. I don't think he's alive anymore.
The silent scream of the memory shook me as I looked the palace towers above the city. The flying palace... They say it's unconquerable. I'll show them, I thought bitterly as I started to walk towards my hideout. Suddenly a blinding light appeared in the sky. I covered my eyes and stared at the light as it loomed above the near buildings. As suddenly as it had appeared, it disappeared in a flash of light. What was that thing, I thought as someone grabbed me from behind and put a glowing dagger against my throat. "We have something to talk about boy", a dark and raspy voice whispered to my ear.
